The routes that exist
Ferries to the Saronic islands (Hydra, Aegina, Poros) leave Piraeus — περίπου 90 λεπτά από την Ύδρα με τυπικά δρομολόγια (προγράμματα χειριστή, έλεγχος τοπικά). How to book ferries
Buy online through operators linked from opensea.gr and piraeusport.gr, at the port kiosk, or via travel agents near Syntagma. Peak July–August Saronic day boats sell out on weekends — book 2–3 days ahead. Foot-passenger and vehicle decks use different queues; hydrofoils cost more but save time — compare posted fares at purchase.
Keep your passport for any international route. Domestic Greek islands need EU ID or passport at check-in. Refund rules depend on the operator — flexible tickets cost more but help if weather cancels sailings. Summer schedules expand from late May; winter services shrink to one or two daily sailings on some lines.
Which islands work as a day trip
Aegina, Hydra and Poros are the standard Saronic day trips — morning metro to Piraeus, first useful sailing, harbour lunch, afternoon return if timetables allow. Hydra needs the full day; Aegina fits a temple visit plus beach if you start early. Overnight on any Saronic island is worthwhile when you want slower evenings without rushing the last ferry.
Cyclades day trips from Athens are rarely realistic — Mykonos or Santorini need flights or overnight ferries. Use Athens as the gateway, not a same-day hop, unless you fly from Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH). See Saronic Islands guide for island-by-island plans.
