Islands from Athens
Routes, crossing times and how to book ferries properly.
The routes that exist
Ferries to the Saronic islands (Hydra, Aegina, Poros) leave Piraeus — about 90 minutes to Hydra on typical sailings (operator schedules, check locally). Rafina port serves some Cyclades routes when you want to avoid crossing Athens traffic. Longer hauls to Crete and the Cyclades also depart Piraeus; crossing times vary by vessel — timetables on opensea.gr and piraeusport.gr.
Reach Piraeus on metro Line 1 (€1.20 OASA ticket, 90 minutes all urban modes, oasa.gr checked Aug 2026) or taxi from Syntagma. Gate letters on tickets matter — Piraeus is large and piers are far apart. Allow 30 minutes from Monastiraki station to the ferry gate on foot plus queue time.
How to book ferries
Buy online through operators linked from opensea.gr and piraeusport.gr, at the port kiosk, or via travel agents near Syntagma. Peak July–August Saronic day boats sell out on weekends — book 2–3 days ahead. Foot-passenger and vehicle decks use different queues; hydrofoils cost more but save time — compare posted fares at purchase.
Keep your passport for any international route. Domestic Greek islands need EU ID or passport at check-in. Refund rules depend on the operator — flexible tickets cost more but help if weather cancels sailings. Summer schedules expand from late May; winter services shrink to one or two daily sailings on some lines.
Which islands work as a day trip
Aegina, Hydra and Poros are the standard Saronic day trips — morning metro to Piraeus, first useful sailing, harbour lunch, afternoon return if timetables allow. Hydra needs the full day; Aegina fits a temple visit plus beach if you start early. Overnight on any Saronic island is worthwhile when you want slower evenings without rushing the last ferry.
Cyclades day trips from Athens are rarely realistic — Mykonos or Santorini need flights or overnight ferries. Use Athens as the gateway, not a same-day hop, unless you fly from Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH). See Saronic Islands guide for island-by-island plans.
Ferry questions
Which islands can you reach from Athens?
Saronic islands (Hydra, Aegina, Poros) from Piraeus; many Cyclades and Crete routes also leave Piraeus, with some Cyclades ferries from Rafina. Timetables on opensea.gr and piraeusport.gr (checked Aug 2026). Metro Line 1 reaches the port (€1.20 OASA ticket).
How far in advance should I book a ferry?
Saronic day boats in July–August: 2–3 days ahead on busy weekends. Cyclades overnight sailings: a week in peak season. Shoulder months often allow same-day kiosk purchase — arrive early if you need a vehicle deck space.
Can you do an island day trip from Athens?
Yes for the Saronic islands — Aegina and Hydra are the usual there-and-back days from Piraeus (~90 minutes to Hydra; confirm locally). Cyclades same-day returns are impractical; fly from ATH or take an overnight ferry instead.
