Athens clubs & stadiums
Who plays where, how to get a ticket, and what a matchday is like.
The clubs
Athens has three historic Super League clubs with very different home grounds. Olympiacos play at Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium in Neo Faliro, Piraeus — metro Line 1 to Faliro, then a short walk. Panathinaikos use Leoforos Alexandras Stadium (Apostolos Nikolaidis) near Ambelokipoi, walkable from Panormou metro. AEK host matches at OPAP Arena (Agia Sophia Stadium) in Nea Filadelfeia — metro Line 1 to Nea Filadelfeia station.
Fixtures move for European games and cup rounds — confirm kick-off and stadium on the club's official site the week you travel. Derby dates (Olympiacos–Panathinaikos, etc.) carry tighter security and sell out faster; avoid if you only want a casual stadium tour.
The stadiums
Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium (Piraeus) — Olympiacos; built for the 2004 Olympics on the old Karaiskakis site beside the Saronic Gulf. Leoforos Alexandras Stadium — Panathinaikos' tight urban ground under the Lykavittos slope; among the oldest active top-flight venues in Greece. OPAP Arena — AEK's 2022 ground in Nea Filadelfeia, modern bowl with a retractable roof section.
Stadium tours run on selected non-match days — schedules and prices on each club's website (check locally; we do not quote match or tour fares that change each season). Allow 45 minutes from Syntagma to Karaiskakis by metro (€1.20 OASA ticket, oasa.gr checked Aug 2026); Leoforos is closer to the centre.
Getting a ticket as a visitor
Buy through each club's official ticket portal — Olympiacos, Panathinaikos and AEK publish sales windows and ID rules online. European matches may require a membership or guest pass; domestic league games often open to tourists with passport details at purchase. We do not list seat prices — they shift by opponent and stand.
Third-party touts around Leoforos and Piraeus are risky and may be illegal for high-risk fixtures. If a game is sold out, watch in a central sports bar instead — confirm kick-off on the league schedule. Urban metro fare to all three grounds remains €1.20 for 90 minutes (oasa.gr, checked Aug 2026).
What a matchday is like
Arrive 60–90 minutes before kick-off for bag checks and seat finding. Karaiskakis concourses serve standard stadium food; Leoforos feels more neighbourhood-pub outside the gates. OPAP Arena has clearer signage but sits farther from tourist hotels — metro back to central Athens runs until roughly midnight (confirm last train locally).
High-risk derbies may ban away colours in parts of the city and enforce escorted away-fan routes — if you are neutral, pick a lower-profile fixture. Police presence is heavy; carry passport or ID matching your ticket name. Emergency 112; tourist police 1571.
Matchday questions
Can tourists buy football tickets in Athens?
Yes for many domestic fixtures — purchase on each club's official site with passport details. European or derby matches may need membership or sell only to registered fans. We do not quote seat prices; check Olympiacos, Panathinaikos and AEK portals the week of the game.
Which stadium should I visit in Athens?
Olympiacos at Georgios Karaiskakis (Piraeus) for a modern seaside ground; Panathinaikos at Leoforos Alexandras for an urban historic stadium; AEK at OPAP Arena for a new bowl in Nea Filadelfeia. Choose by fixture date and metro convenience from your hotel.
Is it safe to attend a match?
Routine league games are manageable if you sit neutral and follow steward instructions. Derbies carry tighter policing and crowd tension — casual visitors should skip them. Carry ID, avoid touts, and use metro or licensed taxis after full-time. Emergency 112.
