Day trips from Athens

Where to go, how long it takes, and how to get there without a car.

Shortlist

The five best day trips, ranked

  1. Saronic Islands (Hydra, Aegina, Poros) — ~90 min ferry from Piraeus (operator schedules — check opensea.gr). Car-free Hydra harbour, closest island escape without flying.
  2. Cape Sounion & Temple of Poseidon — ~90 min by KTEL coastal bus (ktelattikis.gr). Sunset viewpoint on the Saronic Gulf — fits a half-day from Syntagma.
  3. Delphi — ~2.5 h by KTEL from Liosion or guided tour (ktelattikis.gr). Oracle sanctuary and museum — needs a full day on the road.
  4. Nafplio & Mycenae — ~2 h by KTEL from Kifissos or car on the A8 (ktelattikis.gr). Peloponnese fortress town plus Bronze Age citadel in one long day.
  5. Meteora — ~4.5 h by train to Kalambaka or overnight tour. Monasteries on rock pillars — too far for a relaxed return the same evening.

See also Saronic Islands guide and island ferries page for Piraeus booking detail beyond this shortlist.

Logistics

Buses, trains and hire cars

KTEL Attikis coaches leave from Liosion (Delphi) and Kifissos (Peloponnese) terminals — reach them by OASA bus or taxi from the centre (ktelattikis.gr, checked Aug 2026). Coastal routes to Cape Sounion use KTEL Attikis coastal services; confirm timetables before travel. Urban transfer to terminals costs €1.20 on the 90-minute OASA ticket (oasa.gr, checked Aug 2026).

Metro Line 1 runs to Piraeus port for Saronic ferries — ~25 minutes from Monastiraki. Ferry fares vary by operator — check opensea.gr or ticket offices at the port; Hydra crossing ~90 minutes per operator schedules (check locally). There is no passenger train to Delphi or Nafplio — coaches or rental cars cover those routes.

Meteora uses the Athens–Kalambaka train — allow ~4.5 h each way; many visitors book an overnight near Kalambaka instead of a same-day return. Hire cars unlock Mycenae and Sounion detours but add parking stress in Piraeus — compare against KTEL when you do not need flexibility.

Half day

If you only have half a day

Cape Sounion fits a four-hour window plus travel: KTEL coastal bus from Athens (~90 min, ktelattikis.gr), temple visit, return on an afternoon coach. Aegina is the nearest Saronic island — shorter ferry than Hydra (~90 min from Piraeus, schedules on opensea.gr) with time for one harbour lunch before the last boat back.

These options keep you south of the city and back for a Plaka dinner without a rental car. Metro Line 1 to Piraeus (€1.20 OASA ticket, checked Aug 2026) beats a taxi unless you are tight on minutes — confirm €40 flat daytime fare from aia.gr if you transfer from ATH the same morning.

Full day

Trips that need the whole day

Delphi deserves a full day: ~2.5 h KTEL each way from Liosion, sanctuary and museum on site, lunch in modern Delphi village — verify last return coach on ktelattikis.gr. Nafplio & Mycenae need ~2 h driving or coach time plus walking both sites; start early from Kifissos. Hydra ferry day (~90 min from Piraeus) works if you take the first sailing and accept a late return — check operator schedules on opensea.gr.

Meteora at ~4.5 h one way is only sensible as an overnight or on a pre-booked tour bus that handles monastery timetables — do not attempt a casual same-day return by train unless you accept 10+ hours on the move.

Tours

When an organised tour is actually worth it

KTEL covers Cape Sounion and many Delphi departures cheaply — skip tours unless you want hotel pickup or an English-speaking guide at the oracle site. Meteora tours simplify train connections and monastery dress-code briefings; worth comparing against DIY Kalambaka tickets when timetables intimidate you.

Saronic island packages from Piraeus bundle ferry and sometimes lunch — compare operator return times rather than star ratings alone. Cruise-ship shore excursions to Corinth or Sounion cost more than KTEL; pay the premium only if your ship’s timetable is tight.

Common questions

Day-trip questions

What is the best day trip from Athens?

Cape Sounion for a half-day Temple of Poseidon visit (~90 min KTEL, ktelattikis.gr). Hydra or Aegina from Piraeus (~90 min ferry, check opensea.gr) for an island harbour without flying. Delphi and Nafplio need full days on KTEL coaches — book return times before you leave Athens.

Can you do day trips from Athens without a car?

Yes — KTEL Attikis buses reach Cape Sounion, Delphi and the Peloponnese; Metro Line 1 reaches Piraeus for Saronic ferries (€1.20 OASA ticket, oasa.gr, checked Aug 2026). Meteora is possible by train to Kalambaka but tight as a day return (~4.5 h each way). Only remote monastery loops need a hire car.

How far in advance should I book?

Book Saronic ferries and popular KTEL seats in July–August at least a few days ahead — schedules on opensea.gr and ktelattikis.gr. Meteora tours and Delphi coaches fill on weekends June–September. Cape Sounion day tickets usually available same morning unless a public holiday — confirm locally.
